Somerset Potato Day 2009

Potato Days for 2009 have become very popular in the last few years. They are, essentially, an event where you can purchase seed potatoes by the tuber rather than by the 2 or 3 kg bag that most of the garden centres sell.

That way you can buy what you need, try a lot of different varieties and compare tastes, colour and everything else to do with potatoes.

The Somerset Potato day was started 3 years ago by Chris and Mike at Pennard Plants and has grown in popularity. Held at Doulting Village Hall, near Shepton Mallet, it also incorporates the Somerset Seed Swap where you can bring your surplus seeds (packed and labelled please) and 'Swap' them for some different ones. This year (2009) the venue is changing (see below)

This year (2009) the event will be held on Saturday, February 7th from 10.30am until 3.00 pm.
It will be held at Pylle Village Hall, Pylle, Nr. Shepton Mallet, Somerset.

Pylle is situated on the A37 Shepton Mallet to Yeovil Road about 4 miles from Shepton Mallet. The Hall is on the main road just past the not defunct village post office. It will be clearly signed and has a large car park and facilites for our disabled visitors.

There will be potato tastings and refreshments available including light lunches. Admission is FREE.

Onion sets, shallots, garlic, rhubarb, asparagus and other Kitchen Garden essentials will also be on sale as well as a range of spring bulbs in pots.

It's a good day out, plenty of free advice on potato and vegetable growing available and a free potato for the kids to grow.

More info from Chris at [email protected] or telephone 01 749 860039.
